Wireless Access at CCPL

Clay County Public Library now offers free wireless internet access to our patron. Here are the steps that you might need to follow to get connected.

Connecting to CCPL's Wireless Internet

Connecting with Windows XP

  1. When you first start up your computer you should see a balloon message like the one pictured below.wireless1
  2. Click on that bubble and that will bring up the Wireless Network Connection box.
  3. Choose the Wireless network with the most bars of reception and click connect.wireless3
  4. It will take a few moments, but it should connect.
  5. Close the Wireless Network Connection Box and start browsing the Web.

If you are unable to surf the internet after following the step above please make sure that your laptop is configured for DHCP. To make sure that your computer is setup or DHCP please follow the steps below.

  1. Click on Start and then Run.
  2. In the Run box type cmd and hit enter. This will open a Command Prompt Windows
  3. At the Command line type ipconfig /release and then type ipconfig /renew *If you get an error that The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for the operation. You will need to change your settings to allow for DHCP
  4. To change to DHCP you will need to go into your Control Panel and right click your Wireless network and choose Properties
  5. Next under This connection uses the following items: double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
  6. Make sure that Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS Server address automatically are checked. Once done click OK. *This will allow your computer to get an address from our Wireless network.

*Connecting to CCPL's Wireless Internet requires a standard wireless device that is compatible with WIFI standards for 802.11b/g.


Connecting with Mac OS X

  1. Click on the Apple.
  2. System Preferences
  3. Network
  4. Click on Airport in the list of devices and click connect.
  5. It should list the available network to connect to. Choose one from the list.


Hardware Requirement

All you need is a 802.11b or 802.11g WiFi compliant device. A laptop, cellphone, or PDA.

Software Requirements

  • No special software is required. You can use any modern web browser. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, or Opera.

  • Make sure that your computer is setup to accept a IP address from the library's wireless network.

Software Recommendations

  • Up-to-date Anti-Virus software.

  • A Firewall that is active.

  • Latest patches for your operating system.
